Plolyisocyanurate is also referred as
PIR. It is basically a thermoset plastic, mostly developed as foam and used for
tough thermal insulations. In terms of chemical structure, it is quite
equivalent with polyurethane or PUR, with the only difference is its greater
proportion of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate.
Apart from this, it differs as the
polyester-derived polyol is also used in its reaction. It can also be
differentiated from PUR in terms of the usage of catalysts and additives in PIR
formulations.
Application:
PIR is one of the most preferred
insulation materials in modern times. Greater usage of Polyisocyanurate Rigid Board for thermal insulation can be a
perfect example in this regard.
Obviously, these products possess greater thermal conductivity that is
essential for something to be used as thermal insulation material.
Polyisocyanurate foam panels laminated with best quality aluminum foil are also
considered for fabrication purpose. To be specific, these are mostly preferred
for fabrication of pre-insulated duct that is used with heating, ventilation
and air conditioning systems.
Industries
where these are most used:
Manufacture of PIR sheets can be
thoroughly optimized these days as per the requirement of a specific
application. Some applications also require multiple layering. Talking about
the most frequent application of these PIR sheets, these are mostly preferred
by the heavy-duty manufacturers in the industries like aerospace, defense, etc.
On a technical note, these are mostly used for mold formation.
These are also used for tooling purpose
in most cases. Being used as composite core, these are mostly preferred to be
used for protecting the explosive materials. It can well protect the
radioactive materials as well. In many cases, these are also used as the wood
alternative for dimensional symbols.
PIR panels in desired form with
corrosion resistance characteristics and ridged steel facings joined with
central PIR foam are mostly used as the roof top insulations. It can also be
used for insulating the walls of warehouses, factories, official houses, etc. Polyisocyanurate Foam Sheets are also used
for industrial and commercial piping insulation solutions.
Apart from the heavy-duty applications
as explained above, these are also quite used for comparatively lighter
applications. Comparatively softer foam sheets are preferred in such occasions.
Construction:
PIR foams can be referred as the
insulation-grade foams as well. These are mostly developed in large blocks
through consistent extrusion. The blocks thus prepared are then put within the
cutting devices to prepare the sheets and different shapes as per the
requirement. These are developed in different volumes as per the requirement.
With optimizing manufacturing standard,
these devices are getting quite cost-effective as well. Optimized PIR foams
have turned out to be most useful in composite constructions. The larger blocks
of these sheets are prepared either through a consistent extrusion process or
in a batch mode.
After being prepared in desired pattern,
these are cut as per the sheet requirement or as per the desired shape. It can
be independently molded as well in to distinct shapes in case of any specific
requirement.
